Who is Jesus?

But what if his claims were true? What if he was God? Wouldn’t that be worth considering?
— C.S. Lewis

Jesus Christ has remained one of histories most noted people. For some, he is admired for his teachings.  For some he remains a contentious figure or possibly irrelevant figure. Yet for others he’s the one who has brought significant and meaningful change to their lives and the one in whom they find true meaning and purpose.

His reputation is quite amazing when you consider that he started his life as an unknown carpenter from a small town in the Middle East over 2,000 years ago.  Yet even today, Jesus is known for his claims that he is God and his teachings which are seen as revolutionary and respected by many.

Intellectual and author, C.S. Lewis wrote in Mere Christianity, “But what if his claims were true? What if he was God? Wouldn’t that be worth considering? I am trying here to prevent anyone saying the really foolish thing that people often say about Him: I’m ready to accept Jesus as a great moral teacher, but I don’t accept his claim to be God. That is the one thing we must not say. A man who was merely a man and said the sort of things Jesus said would not be a great moral teacher. He would either be a lunatic — on the level with the man who says he is a poached egg — or else he would be the Devil of Hell. You must make your choice. Either this man was, and is, the Son of God, or else a madman or something worse. You can shut him up for a fool, you can spit at him and kill him as a demon or you can fall at his feet and call him Lord and God, but let us not come with any patronizing nonsense about his being a great human teacher. He has not left that open to us. He did not intend to.”

We believe that Jesus Christ was God and that he entered into our world and became one of us to show us what God was like if God were in the flesh.  Jesus said, “ If you know me then you’ll know God”.

We believe that the best decision any person could make is to get to know Jesus and experience his forgiveness, his security and his life that he gives to those who turn to him. That’s our primary purpose as a church.

We understand faith as a lifelong pursuit whether you are sceptical or convinced. Many people at Dublin Vineyard are at different places in their faith journey so you’re really welcome to explore ideas like faith, God and who Jesus is.  We have different environments, such as The Alpha Course, that are designed to facilitate the exploration of faith.  We invite you to learn more about Jesus Christ and find for yourself who he is and how you can find peace, hope, purpose and meaning in and through him.

THE ALPHA COURSE

A place to explore
Sometimes you get moments when you start to think about deeper things and you start to ask deep questions. Questions like: Is there more to life than what I’m experiencing? Does God really exist? Who was Jesus and did he really exist? Alpha is a ten week course that has been put together to help people explore the deeper questions that they may have about life and about the Christian faith.

What is the course like?
The course is run in a very informal environment that is fun and friendly and there are some nice things to eat too. The course itself consists of a series of DVD presentations and encourages lots of questions and discussions in smaller groups. No question is stupid or out of bounds and you are free to discuss as much or as little as you with.

Who is Alpha for?
Alpha is for everyone. We don’t assume any background knowledge of or belief in Christianity and everyone is welcome.

When is the next Alpha Course?
Please contact the church office for the date of our next Alpha Course.
